The old fire station in Jurgów last Sunday afternoon (June 29, 2008) was teeming with life. An exhibition of historic pictures of Jurgów was opened there, and Mr. Józef Górka councilman of the Bukowina Tatrzańska Commune Council, inaugurated the exhibition. One of the first visitors to the exhibition was the priest of Jurgów's parish, Rector Józef Marek. Many of Jurgów's inhabitants were enjoying the exhibition; all of them were watching old pictures with interest. Older people were trying to recognize themselves or their parents, while younger ones were observing how Jurgów looked several decades ago. For the youngest, it was very difficult to imagine that there was no asphalt road in our village.
Pictures for the exhibition were collected over several years, and finally, this year, it was possible to showcase a portion of them at the exhibition. Hopefully, the exhibition will motivate people to share other pictures from their private archives. There are around 120 pictures on display, which you can see are the most intriguing and of good quality, having been scanned and prepared for the exhibition. The total number of pictures collected is more than 1000.
On our web page for some time we have also few old pictures of Jurgów and inhabitants:
The pictures on the exhibition depict the very rich and complicated history of Jurgów. You can see pictures of Jurgów's brass band playing in Bratislava (Slovakia), participants of "Gazdinskeho kurzu", a carving school, old Jurgów's inn, and many other interesting scenes.
